He obtained his secondary school diploma at the Amsterdams Lyceum and went on to study viola at the Amsterdam Conservatory, as well as composition under Sem Dresden.
In De Vries Robbé’s oeuvre, the flute occupies a particularly prominent place. He composed orchestral works (including 'Serenade', 'Ballade', 'Pastorale', and 'Eclogues' for string orchestra), concertante works (such as 'Allegro' for flute and orchestra, 'Concertino' for flute and harp with orchestra, and 'Concerto Pastorale' for flute and orchestra), and chamber music (including 'Serenades' for flute and string trio, a string quartet, 'Butterflies' for vibraphone, and 'Variations in Old Style' for three bassoons).
