Lina Tonia, is a young Greek composer born in 1985. She participated in several national and international composition competitions and awarded prizes for her works in New York, Weimar, Vienna, Paris, Moscow, Plovdiv, Sofia, London, Tirana, Zagreb, Athens and Thessaloniki.
She received the Baerenreiter prize for her work “CONtrust” (2010). Her chamber opera "The Expelled" awarded and performed by the Greek National Opera in Athens (2012). Her chamber opera "Fear &(s) the Love" awarded and performed in Music Biennale in Zagreb (2015). She awarded with the title of "Young artist of the year" from the Union of Critics of Music and Theater in Athens (2008).
She has been performed by many artists, and worked for her works with many ensembles and orchestras including the Arditti Quartet, the London Contemporary Orchestra, the Jalas Chamber Orchestra, the Edinburgh Quartet, the Alea III ensemble, the Hebrides ensemble, the ensemble Marges, the Dissonart ensemble, the Piandaemonium ensemble, the Idee Fix ensemble, the Greek National Opera, the State Orchestra of Athens, the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki and broadcasted on BBC Radio3.
She studied composition (Bachelor and Master degree) at the Department of Music Studies in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with professor Christos Samaras. She completed a PhD in composition in Edinburgh University (2008 – 2012) with professor Nigel Osborne and Michael Edwards, where she was studying with a Greek National Scholarship from Union of Greek Composers (2008 – 2009) and IKY Foundation (2009 – 2011). She studied composition (Master degree) with Michael Jarrell at the Vienna University (2012 – 2013). She worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Music Theory & Composition with a fellowship of Research Committee of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
