composer
Sabbatini, Galeazzo
Date of birth:
1597
Galeazzo Sabbatini was an Italian composer and music theorist of the early Baroque period. He was born in Pesaro, Italy in 1597. We know that he studied music with Vincenzo Pellegrini, a canon at the local cathedral. Sabbatini’s first appearance in the records is in 1620 when he was organist in the Pesaro Cathedral. In 1626 Sabbatini succeeded Pellegrini as maestro di cappella. After 4 years he went to Mirandola to be the chapel master for the Duke until 1639. In 1641 he became chapel master in Pesaro again.
His work as music theorist was better known than as a composer. He wrote a treatise on continuo playing, published in 1628, and a method of tuning. As a composer he wrote motets and several books of madrigals in a conventional style for those days. The texts for his madrigals were poems of the best known poets in these days: Torquato Tasso, Cesare Abelli, Pietro Peracci and Orazio Parma, to mention a few.
