Roe, Chris

Nationality: Engeland
Date of birth: 1988

Described as “brilliantly unnerving”, “lyrical and strident”, and “highly energetic”, Chris’ music has been performed throughout the UK and Europe. Recent highlights include the premiere of his orchestral work ‘Lavoisier’s Mirror’s’, having been awarded second prize in the International Lutosławski Composition Competition, and a performance of ‘Duo Notturno’ at London’s Wigmore Hall. After being ‘Apprentice Composer’ with the Orchestra of the Swan in 2012-13, Chris was selected for the ‘Adopt a Composer’ scheme, writing a new work for the City of Cambridge
Symphony Orchestra to be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 early in 2015.

Chris spent his formative years as a composer studying Music at the University of Manchester, before studying as an Ian Evans Lombe scholar on the Masters course at the Royal College of Music with Kenneth Hesketh, graduating with the Adrian Cruft composition prize. Chris has worked with groups including the London Sinfonietta, Composers Ensemble, ECCE, l’Arsenale, the Riot Ensemble, Tête à Tête and NonClassical, and has been selected for masterclasses including the St. Magnus Composition Course in Orkney, and the Etchings Festival in France.

Chris is also founder and conductor of ANIMA, an innovative ensemble performing live contemporary music with animated films, and has performed new works from students at the Royal Academy of Music as well as Oxford University.
