Matty Niël decides at an early age to devote his life to music. His time as a student of Anton Webern is the most important period of his education. He composes an extensive body of works. Many of these are written on commission or funded by grants from the Dutch government, the Regionale Omroep Zuid [Regional Southern Broadcasting Company] and the BRT [Belgian Radio and Television]. His list of works shows a wide variety of instrumental and vocal settings: piano, organ and guitar, solo sonatas for violin, viola and cello, chamber music, many songs, cantatas, Masses, choral works, orchestral works, a piano concerto, and an opera on Georg Buchner's Leonce and Lena. Niël sought in his music to return to the source - the Middle Ages - to discover in looking back from that starting point what was actual and permanent through the ages. According to Niël, the technique a composer chose was immaterial; what was important was how one made it one's own. In his words: “Music must become dialect. Only then can one speak of style”. During his lifetime Niël often run into miscomprehension of his music. He dies before many of his works are performed or published.

Matty Niël wordt geboren op 23 oktober in Maastricht. Hij studeert piano en theorie in Maastricht bij Henri Hermans, piano bij Louis Closson in Luik en - in 1939 - piano bij Alexander Borovsky en compositie bij Henk Badings in Amsterdam.

Niël gaat naar Wenen en krijgt daar les van Anton Webern. In 1944 verblijft hij enkele maanden in Parijs waar hij contrapuntles krijgt van Daniel-Lesur en compositie van Olivier Messiaen.

Na de oorlog bouwt Matty Niël een carrière op als docent in Limburg. Intussen werkt hij korte tijd voor het Lemmens-instituut te Leuven, neemt hij regelmatig plaats in jury’s en geeft hij lezingen over Anton Webern. Niël werkt tot 1951 voor de Regionale Omroep Zuid in Maastricht. In 1953 wordt hij docent theorie aan de muziekschool in Heerlen en docent piano in Sittard.

Wouter Paap schrijft over de moeizame relatie die Niël heeft met het Nederlandse componistenleven. Als Niël, bij hoge uitzondering, buiten Limburg enige liederen begeleidt, tekent Paap op: "Matty Niël schijnt er weinig naar te talen tot het 'Hollandse' muziekleven door te dringen. Wil men iets van hem te horen krijgen, dan moet men naar Zuid-Limburg gaan."

Op het conservatorium van Maastricht doceert Niël theorie en compositie. In 1965 wordt hem de Cultuurprijs van Limburg toegekend. In de jaren zeventig is hij lid van de 'International Webern Society', neemt deel aan het vijfde Webern Festival te Wenen en werkt mee aan een film over Webern.

Zijn verschillende banen als docent zegt Niël dit jaar op om een periode in het buitenland te verblijven en zich uitsluitend nog op het componeren te concentreren.
