Monnikendam composed mostly sacred and orchestral music in a traditional style. He received various government commissions for new works. A well-known orchestral piece of his is Arbeid, Symphonische Beweging [Labour, Symphonic Movement] (1931). Sacred music – including various Masses and three Te Deum settings – formed an important part of his oeuvre. Among his other vocal works are the Lamentations of Jeremiah (1956), written in commemoration of Queen Wilhemina; the Requiem, for choir, contralto and percussion (1961), written in the memory of those who fell in World War II; and the oratorio Noë ou La Destruction du Premier Monde (1956).
Monnikendam also composed chamber music, songs and incidental music for the theatre. He was a music editor for various newspapers and magazines.
1896 - 1926
Marius Monnikendam wordt geboren op 28 mei in Haarlem. Hij studeert aan het Amsterdams Conservatorium: orgel bij J.B. de Pauw en compositie bij Sem Dresden. In 1925 ontvangt hij een staatsstipendium voor een muziekstudie in het buitenland. Hiermee studeert hij in Parijs Vincent d'Indy en Louis Aubert.
1927 - 1933
Na zijn studie geeft hij enkele jaren les in compositie en theorie aan het Conservatorium te Rotterdam en het Muzieklyceum te Amsterdam.
1931
Het orkestwerk 'Arbeid', symphonische beweging' draagt Monnikendam op aan het Concertgebouworkest en Willem Mengelberg, die de eerste uitvoering geven.
1933
Monnikendam wordt benoemd tot muziekredacteur bij het dagblad De Maasbode. Na fusie van De Maasbode met De Tijd (1960) is hij aan de nieuwe dagbladcombinatie vast verbonden. Ook levert hij regelmatig bijdragen aan het muziektijdschrift Mens en Melodie.
1956
Dit jaar componeert Monnikendam 'Klaagzangen van Jeremias', geschreven ter herdenking van koningin Wilhelmina, en het oratorium 'Noë ou La destruction du premier monde'.
1961
'Requiem' voor koor, altsolo en slagwerk gaat in première. Het is gecomponeerd ter herdenking van de gevallenen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
1977
Marius Monnikendam overlijdt op 22 mei te Heerlen.
