Alfonso Molina (b.1980) Mexican composer of opera, orchestral music, chamber music, musical theater, film and other audiovisual arts, from Sonora, Mexico. Molina makes use of 20th and 21st Century music elements and techniques, as well as Mexican Folk influences driven from the past, to create music. His music can be eclectic, energetic and diverse. Molina also makes use of electronic sounds, digital musical elements and other crossover genres to enrich a musical concept. He is also interested in incorporating political and social issues in his compositions in order to raise awareness and advocating for bringing people together. His first opera, entitled Illegal Alien (2014), was described by the Boston Metro Opera (BMO), as an opera that “fosters awareness through both text and music”, the opera deals with immigration issues like xenophobia and the right to private property.
Molina has also established numerous collaborative works with choreographers, theater companies and filmmakers. His works include soundtracks of many independent films and documentaries like “De Nadie” (Border Crossing), winner of the (2006) Sundance Film Festival Audience Award, La Patrona, Cannes Official Selection (2011) and Proof of Birth (2007) . His works have been performed in New York, California, Spain, Brazil, Czech Republic, Arizona, Mexico, among other places.
He has been recognized with numerous awards and scholarships, including ASCAP, Columbia University, New York University, Boston Metro Opera (BMO), the Carolina Foundation, the National Fund for Culture and Arts of Mexico (FONCA-CONACYT), the Artistic and Creation Development Program (PECDA), Sonora´s State Fund for Art and Culture among others.
Molina made his professional studies with Rudolph Palmer and David Tcimpidis at The Mannes Conservatory, The New School for Music and he obtained his Master of Music, studying with Richard Danielpour and Marjorie Merryman at the Manhattan School of Music. Additional studies include studies with Samuel Zyman and Ladislav Kubik. Molina holds a Doctorate from the University of Arizona where he studied with Daniel Asia.
Currently, Molina is doing a residency in Barcelona Spain, due to a scholarship from the Carolina Foundation, at the Cataluña's Superior School of Music (ESMUC), working with Musical Visual Arts.
