Nikos Kokolakis (1981) was born in Heraklion - Crete (GR).
He studied Physics at the University of Crete and Music Composition at the Ionian University in Corfu with J. Papadatos and D. Trypani. He finished his Master studies in Composition at the Royal Conservertory in The Hague with P. Adriaansz, Y. Kyriakides and M. Padding.
His main compositional interests lie in developing an understanding of sound as space in sonic structures. His research in this subject with Raviv Ganchrow lead to several compositions since 2016.
He focuses in instrumental composition and multimedia works. He worked with various ensembles and soloists including New European Ensemble, Ives Ensemble and Slagwerk Den Haag and he is an active member of the Catchpenny Ensemble (NL), focusing in multimedia and collective composition.
In 2016 he won the first prize in the Composition Concours withing the TROMP international percussion competition for his piece Stream for Marimba performed by Jonathan Bonny, and in 2015 the second prize in the International Carillon Composition Contest in Zwolle for his piece Squarcle performed by Gijsbert Kok.
He is currently living and working in The Hague.
