Nikos Kokolakis (1981 GR) is a composer, performer (electronics/visuals), sound artist, and educator currently based in Crete.
He studied Physics at the University of Crete and Music Composition at the Ionian University and at the University of York via the Erasmus programme. He obtained his Master degree in Composition at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.
In his works he approaches sound as space within sonic structures, while exploring mathematical algorithms and models in a playful way. He is engaged in multidisciplinary artistic approaches and is an active member of various artists’ initiatives, including being a founder of Catchpenny Ensemble (NL) focusing on multimedia composition.
His works have been performed in major venues and festivals in the Netherlands and abroad. In 2016 he won the first prize in the Composition Concours within the TROMP international percussion competition for his piece Stream for Marimba performed by Jonathan Bonny, and in 2015 the second prize in the International Carillon Composition Contest in Zwolle for his piece Squarcle performed by Gijsbert Kok. His piece Bagatelles for Carillon was selected to be performed on the 100th anniversary of the Dutch Carillon Society.
