Pavel Karmanov was born in 1970 in the city of Bratsk, Irkutsk into a family of musicians. He began writing music in Novosibirsk at the age of 5. In 1988 he graduated from the Central Music School and in 1995 from Moscow Conservatory in 1995. At various times, he studied with Yu.Kholopov, A.Leman, A.Bykanov, G. Dmitriev and A. Nikolayev. During his secondary school and college years actively participated in Moscow concert, comprising in various styles. Since the early 90s he became very interested in aesthetic post-avant-garde, "new simplicity" and "minimalism".
Today Karmanov’s music possesses inherent tonal certainty, impressionistic color, brevity of form, original refraction of post-avantgarde practices, use of various contemporary styles and various audio-visual effects in a concert performance.
Since 1996, Karmanov is a member of Moscow Union of Composers. He is also a permanent member of various musical festivals, such as Moscow Autumn ('91, ‘96, ‘97, ‘98 , 2006), Alternative (‘96, ‘97, ‘98), Festival in memory of Oleg Kagan (Moscow, 1992), in memory of Anatoly Vedernikov Festival (1997) and the festival Sound Route 1999 Tokyo - Moscow (Japan 1999), Dialogue (Moscow 1996), the E.Denisov festival in Tomsk (2003), Warsaw Autumn (2005), and the Shostakovich festival in Seattle, USA (2006) .
Karmanov’s compositions are currently performed in the Great, Small and Rachmaninov halls of the Moscow Conservatory, at the House of Composers, the Cultural Center DOM, the Grand and Small halls of St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and at concerts and festivals in different cities around the world.
Karmanov's music is most frequently interpreted by pianist and harpsichordist Alexei Lyubimov, violist and conductor Yuri Bashmet, violinist, violist and conductor Nazar Kozhukharand his Pocket Symphony, violinist Tatiana Grindenko and "OPUSPOSTH", percussionist Mark Baking and his ensemble, pianists Alexey Goribol, Polina Ossetinskaya, Mikhail Dubov, violinists Marina Katarzhnova, Elena Revich, Vladislav Pessin and his The ONE Orchestra, violists Maxim Novikov and Mikhail Bereznitsky, the Moscow Ensemble of Contemporary Music (MACM), PADSEnsemble (Italy), the Seattle Chamber Players ensemble (USA), the Odeon Quartet (USA), the Youth Choir of the Philharmonic Society of Saint Petersburg under direction of Julia Khutoretskaya, historical instruments orchestra PRATUM INTEGRUM under direction of Pavel Serbin, the State Chamber Orchestra of Russia and oboist
Alexei Utkin, the Ural Symphony Orchestra.
Pavel Karmanov has also composed music for many feature and documentary films. Among these are Timur Bekmambetov’s Arena (Gladiatrix) and GAZ - Russian Cars, Andrei Proshkin’s Soldier Decameron, Mary Mozhar’s Enemies, Matvei Zhivov’s Letter, Eugene Pashkevich’s Gulfstream under the Iceberg and others. Karmanov created soundtracks for TV series, such as Nana Jorjadze’s Only You, Ali Khamrayev’s Place in the Sun and Artists, Oleg Fesenko’s Multiplying sorrow, as well as for the animated films of Ivan Maximov, The Flood and Bridge in the Right Direction, and documentary films of Alex Khanyutin including Music for Fireworks, Context, Evacuation and The Road. Since 1997, the music of Pavel Karmanov is constantly heard in many TV commercials, and various TV and radio promos.
Among Pavel Karmanov’s many projects are "Vertep" at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall 2002 with participation of the spiritual music ensable Sirin, Academy of Ancient Music under direction of Tatiana Grindenko, rock-group The Polite refusal, percussion ensemble under direction of Mark Pekarski, Gnessin Vituosi orchestra, conductor Mikhail Khokhlov, projects "13 Karmanov " and "Birthday" at the Moscow Cultural Center DOM (2000-2006), authors evening in the Small Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic (2004). A notable event was the premiere of the play Springtime in January at the Great Hall of the Conservatory for Yuri Bashmet, Alexei Lyubimov and New Russia Orchestra (2005). The play "Get in!!" closed the Moscow Autumn (2006) festival. In 2006 Nazar Kozhukhar and The Pocket Symphony recorded and released on DOM-records a chamber music debut CD.
Since 2000, Pavel Karmanov is also a member of the Moscow rock group Vezhlivii Otkaz (Polite refusal) led by Roman Suslov. With it, he performs regularly as a pianist and flutist.
Currently Pavel Karmanov lives and works in Moscow.
