Camillo Cortellini (1561-1630) was an Italian composer, son of Gaspare ‘Viola’ Cortellini, a famous violist. Because of this, Camillo was called ‘violino’. Camillo got his first musical education from his father who was employed in de Concerto Palatino in the 16th c. and in which post he succeeded his father. Camillo was also cornetto player, singer and trombonist. In 1593 he was elected cantor of the San Petrino Basilica, a very prestigious post, where he served until his death in 1630. Four years earlier he became a member of the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, a more honorary title.
His work consisted of several madrigal books, psalms and masses for 4, 5, 6 & 8 voices. And two books of Messe concertate a 8 voci (1616 & 1626). He was the first composer in Bologna to publish concerted Masses: masses for voices and instruments.
