Burg, Roos van der
My name is Roos van der Burg. My background is not primarily musical. I trained as a sociologist and I have worked for governments and commercial companies. In addition, I played the piano from a young age. At the age of 40, I started with singing lessons, and that was immediately a great love to me. I sang solo and in choirs, and took cello lessons for a few years. Because a singing career was not an option, I attended the Schumann Academy (conservatory for theory only). In this way, I developed into a composer of mainly art songs. Now I also write for ensemble, often with a singing voice, and instrumental music,
When composing, I usually let myself be guided by the emotions in a text. Atmosphere and nature are important to me in this proces. This can lead into all directions, from romantic to very rational, for example, as each era has its own thinkers and poets. This also results in very different music. I like new classical music, fusion is not so much my cup of tea. My music gives an auditory interpretation to lyrics that adds extra or new meaning, which the listener can experience in order to delve deeper into the emotions of the lyrics.
