Ton Bruynèl was the first Dutch composer to set up his own electronic studio. Almost all of his works combine music performed live and taped sounds whose timbres, though electronically generated, closely relate to those of the instrument. Bruynèl's music has a pronounced panoramic character. He found his most important sources of inspiration in natural phenomena, the visual arts and poetry. “I have great respect for the instrumental sound,” he said in 1983. “Such a thing shouldn't be taped or amplified with microphones and loudspeakers. That is always detrimental to it, because you're throwing two things together. But if you put a few instruments there, and then the tape over them, that's beautiful.”
