Cornelis de Bondt is not afraid of large gestures. His composition 'Bloed' (1997-2001) is about the traumatic consequences of war passed down from father to son. In other works, such as the piano concerto 'Die wahre Art' (2000) and the cycle 'Het gebroken oor' [The Broken Ear, 1984] he turns his imagination loose on Western music history. De Bondt quotes historical works, placing them in a new context, thus placing music history itself under the microscope. The title 'Die wahre Ar't is an allusion to a book by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in which he teaches techniques for conveying emotions on the harpsichord. It is a paradox that appeals directly to the composer. In De Bondt’s music, technique and emotion enter into an always uneasy, freakish union. But then, listening is not meant to be easy.
1953 - 1984
Cornelis de Bondt wordt geboren op 9 december in Den Haag. Hij studeert aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Theorie volgt hij bij Hein Kien, Ineke Kien-Vermaas en Diderik Wagenaar; compositie onder meer bij Jan van Vlijmen en Louis Andriessen. Hij sluit zijn studie af met de Prijs voor Compositie.
1985
Tijdens het Holland Festival gaat 'De deuren gesloten' in première. Dit stuk is het 2de deel van de cyclus 'Het gebroken oor'.
1988
De Bondt wordt docent theoretische vakken aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. 'Grand Hotel - het laatste deel van de cyclus 'Het gebroken oor' - wordt in première gebracht door pianist Gerard Bouwhuis aan wie het stuk is opgedragen.
2000
Het pianoconcert 'Die wahre Art' gaat op 6 mei in première met Gerard Bouwhuis in het Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht.
2001 - 2002
De Bondt geeft een masterclass in Canada. 'Gli toccha la mano' (2002) is geschreven voor Orkest De Volharding en Icebreaker.
2006
Cornelis de Bondt wordt benoemd tot docent compositie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Hij componeert een tweeluik voor orkest 'Quene Note' dat wordt uitgevoerd door het JeugdOrkest Nederland met dirigent Jurjen Hempel.
2010
Op 19 februari gaat in Vredenburg Leidsche Rijn in Utrecht 'Gran Sinfonia - Il tempo giusto' in première, uitgevoerd door de Radio Kamer Filharmonie onder leiding van Otto Tausk.
