Andrius Arutiunian (b.1991, Vilnius) is an Armenian-Lithuanian composer and sound artist. His works comprise of installations and multimedia works, as well as live electronic and audiovisual performances. Arutiunian’s music explores various histories through their sonic artifacts, often dealing with identity, sonic appropriation and thresholds of signals and noise. His practice is often based on sound and hybrid forms of media.
Based in The Hague, Arutiunian works, performs, and teaches within both contemporary music and contemporary art contexts. He obtained his BA and MA degrees at the Royal Conservatory The Hague under Yannis Kyriakides and Peter Adriaansz. Arutiunian is currently a guest tutor at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, where he teaches new sonic practices at the Master Artistic Research department. Since 2016, he is also a music researcher at the Sedje Hémon Stichting.
Arutiunian has written over 40 pieces, comprising of works for ensembles, chamber groups and multimedia works, often combined with electronics and/or video. His pieces have been performed or commissioned by Ensemble Adapter, MAZE, Ensemble Modelo62, Nadar, Slagwerk Den Haag, Synaesthesis, and other contemporary music groups. His music has been presented in numerous contemporary music festivals and venues such as Gaudeamus (NL), Melos-Ethos (SL), deSingel (BE), as well as numerous performances in the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Lithuania, Estonia, and Canada. He is a recipient of the “Young Artist of 2017” award by the Lithuanian Composers Union.
Arutiunian’s sound works have been recently shown or performed at Documenta 14, Parliament of Bodies (DE), Stedelijk Museum (NL), Contemporary Art Centre (LT), MO Museum (LT), and MAZE festival (NL); he was selected as an artist-in-residence the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art (UK) in 2019.
